Review of Unleashed (2005) by Deb S — 08 Feb 2010
This is the story of Danny, (Jet Li) a man with no history who has lived his whole life without any sort of normal human education. He's raised by a loan shark gangster, Bart (Bob Hoskins) who raises Danny as a vicious killer and a lethal fighting machine who helps him to get money by beating up people who don't pay up. Taught to live by eating scraps underneath Bart's office, Danny is a dog at Bart's beck and call. With a whistle, Danny can and does kill.
However, when a car accident lands Bart in a coma, Danny manages to escape and is found by Sam(Morgan Freeman) who lives with with his step-daughter Victoria(Kerry Condon). They use music and kindness to teach Danny some things about the world and the simple joys in life.
A brutal but very likable film that is a perfect blend of drama, comedy and bone crunching action topped by a touching performance from Morgan Freeman as a blind piano tuner who unlocks the humanity in the Dog (Jet Li). Highly recommended with brilliant and spectacular fight scenes.
