Review of Unleashed (2005) by Gary C — 20 Oct 2010
The action in this movie is a little different than the action in most martial arts movies. Usually, it's all impressive choreography (which I really like). But this has impressive choreography plus a really realistic brutal feel. For instance, instead of just hitting one of the several bad-guys once and they fall down for the rest of the fight, Li wails on them to make the hell sure they don't get up again.
Now along with impressive action, this martial arts movie is also set aside from the other because of its story. Despite being fairly simple, it's very good and quite powerful. It doesn't particularly say anything you probably don't already know: Family; good, crime; bad. But it does a good job of saying it and it shows you why.
At the beginning of the movie when Danny (Li) is in his first life where he's raised as an animal by a criminal, the camera movements are all a bit jerky and sharp with choppy editing. That helps give it an unsettling feeling. But when he's taken in by Morgan Freeman, the camera movements become much more smooth and gentle. I like that.
It's not exactly anything anyone NEEDS to see. But if you get the chance, I'd definitely recommend it.
