Review of Universal Soldier: The Return (1999) by Andrei N — 03 Apr 2009
Harmless, easy to watch -sequel. But still, it's far from the original. Michael Jai White growls with his deep voice, and Bill Goldberg just is big and there. Neither of them is Dolph Lundgren. Even Van Damme has kinda lost his touch, Luc doesn't feel like the same person from first movie. And ladies in this movie? Well, they look nice, but especially Heidi Schanz delievers some incredibly bad lines.
For a few years, this was last Van Damme movie to be released theatrically in US. But still, it has occasional feel of straight-to-dvd movie. Director Mic Rodgers is stuntman, and second unit director, and that shows. There is some nice action scenes, but Emmerich he is not.
Ok way to spend hour and fifteen (that is one good thing, it is not too long), but I prefer original.
Oh, and why the hell there is ALWAYS some generic rock songs playing during gun fights?! In those scenes, all you can hear is just cacophony of someone yelling lyrics and sounds of machine guns. What's wrong with score? Or just sound effects? Best fight scene in whole movie is the one between Van Damme and White at the end, because it looks good, and there is no rock, just score! End of bitching...
