Review of Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2010) by Russell G — 06 Feb 2010
I didn't expect much from this movie considering it's a direct to video of a franchise that never really was that great in the first place but I have to say, this is a solid action flick thanks to great stunts and strong direction.
To get it out the way, the story isn't all that compelling and the basic elements have been done a lot before (terrorists kidnap people/ will blow up something if people don't meet demands) however I did like some of the ways that handled the characters in particular Van Damme's character.
The acting is also fairly medicore (again expected) but it was great to see a reunion for Lundgren and Van Damme and their fight sequence was easily the best in the movie. Universal Soldier: Regeneration may be straight to DVD but it doesn't look like it.
The action sequences were well done with a ton of cool moments and quite a bit of good old fashion bloodiness (one kill involving a piep and a shotgun was crazy). Director John Hyams keeps the movie gritty and his style worked great for the movie.
So overall, I enjoyed Universal Soldier: Regeneration; it's nothing brilliant but for a quick action fix, the movie is a solid watch and it is awesome to see Van Damme kicking ass again.
