Review of Universal Soldier: Regeneration (2010) by Ross M — 01 Mar 2010
The best of the three Van Damme "Universal Soldier" movies to date. This third installment is an entertaining, hardcore action/sci-fi flick that's (refreshingly) coherently directed by first-time helmer John Hyams (showing real promise using little or no CGI) and well-photographed by his veteran, underrated writer/director/cinematographer father, Peter Hyams ("Outland," "Timecop," "The Relic").
They make a dynamic action- filmmaking duo, filming much of the action in medium and long shots so you can actually ascertain what's going on for once. The only disappointment is that Dolph Lundgren's role is little more than a glorified cameo.
Otherwise, this is a big step above the usual direct-to-DVD sequel.
