Review of Universal Soldier (1992) by Nathan N — 19 Feb 2010
Eighteen years and billions of budget dollars later, this is still Roland Emmerich's best American film. Van Damme may be our topline protagonist but the real star of Universal Soldier is Dolph's epic Vietnam raving.
Van Damme is fine as a sort of goofy T2 T-800 but he's a little bland. Dolph's performance is a stark and wonderful contrast. He screams about "traitors" and "gooks" and does it all while wearing the disgruntled 'Nam must-have: an ear necklace.
This is a very high 3.
