Review of Universal Soldier (1972) by Sean W — 30 Sep 2010
Before disaster flicks, Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, 2012) directed this little Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle. Growing up, it was forever defined for me as â??the movie where Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren throw down in the rain.
â?? Isnâ??t that the way it always worked with those 80s/90s action stars? From Schwarzenegger to Seagal, the storyâ??s were always an excuse to see these guys in action. Sure, some of them got better stories than others, but that was pretty much it.
Universal Soldier really is no different, but it succeeds in its goal. The movieâ??s a little ho-hum in its opening, but once it becomes an on-the-road chase flick, the entertainment factor kicks up a notch.
It also helps to have a slice of humor on the side (intentional or no) to make the main dish go down all the smoother. Odds are if you had any interest in this flick youâ??ve seen it, but if youâ??re looking for some mindless entertainment with a few of the â??classicâ?? action stars .
. . look no further.
