Review of Unfriended: Dark Web (2018) by Wayne K — 14 Sep 2018
As our use and reliance on technology has increased, it seems inevitable that we would have a film like this, which takes place entirely on a computer screen, with young adults Skyping, Facebooking, E-mailing etc.
I didn't see the first film, and only knew a few things about it before I watched this one, but I still had a good time watching it. The acting feels very authentic, and the exploration of the Deep Web, while limited, is still fascinating.
It's a glimpse into a dark world that exists at our very fingertips, yet is available only to those with the knowhow. It does annoyingly end on the familiar twist of 'It's not at all what we thought it was', and the baddies seem way too omnipotent for it to be even slightly realistic.
Also, if you don't want to spend an hour and a half staring at a bunch of close-up faces on a computer screen, this film definitely isn't for you. But I thought it was an often shocking and frequently sickening dive into a place so murky and secretive that it's only spoken about in hushed whispers.
I'm not sure I'd bother seeing it again, but for a one-off, it was still quite an adventure.
