Review of Unfriended (2014) by Seb M — 04 Aug 2015
An interesting and thought-provoking new entry into the found-footage genre.
The whole movie takes place on the Macbook screen of a teen girl with Skype calls and iMessages. The film definitely has its subtle moments like when we see the main character type something in a chat box but then deletes it to type something totally different. All programs and websites are real, so you have the real Facebook layout, real Skype sounds etc. and it does get generally interesting as the "Cybernatural" ghost starts turning good friends against one another.
While a little gimmicky and a bit of a scream-fest it still makes you think about anonymity online and even how people's true natures can come out when hiding behind a screen, one of the ghost's final messages is actually both relevant and profound. Certainly not the best horror, but a unique film that really makes you think, whether it was intentional or not.
