Review of Unfriended (2014) by Erica Q — 18 Aug 2015
Dubbed as "cyber-horror" movie since it uses the cyber space of social media predominantly to deliver scare, Unfriended is an indie film that confuses between horror and found-footage type of movie.
Unfriended believed that by using the a cyber space theme it will be a big buzz of scares and horrors with associations like watching TV of The Ring, cabinet of The Grudge and bees of Candyman. And in this case, getting scares from using Facebook, Skype and Internet.
I thought it will be a role and dialogue traditional movie but instead it was shot via a laptop monitor that was so messy and dizzying to watch! You are watching as if looking directly into a computer screen and watch everything happens.
It was a clever style but if that is the case, I rather watch it on my computer rather than suffer dizziness on the big screen! 70 percent of the film about 3/4 of the film is boring with the remaining 30 percent about last 20 minutes of the film where it grows to be alive because it was the revelation part.
While it delivers a messy monitor to watch, Unfriended is also confusing between which themes to take - whether horror, thriller or found-footage type of film. But I am certain that it wasn't a scary movie! Whatever Unfriended is trying to attain, to innovate or to scare as a film, it is certainly unsuccessful.
The story was forgettable although I appreciate of bringing light to cyberbullying. But I still find it hard to appreciate this "enemy" movie!
