Review of Unfriended (2014) by Tom L — 15 Feb 2016
Sort of a modern day Blair Witch project, worked on some levels, but not on others. I found that the filmmakers experiment, with using laptops, skype, facebook, and all other forms of social media, as the story telling mechanics for this film, interesting and familiar, but it was problematic.
There were lots of uncomfortable pauses, waiting to see who would react to what, which might be realistic to a degree, but certainly not dramatic nor compelling. Also, the missing emotional push of a score was lacking.
Lazy filmmaking choices. Throw in some other devices, some exterior shots, some other character perspectives. Living within the skype universe for 2 hours, was exhausting. And seriously...these hve to be the stupidest millenials you can think of.
They are so wired in, that they don't use cell phones, or land lines, or hell, just open your window and scream help...The best idea, was to go on chat roulette, and ask for help? Flawed,. The idea, itself, was not a bad one.
Just executed more for style, then for substance.
