Review of Unfriended (2014) by Jamie J — 22 Feb 2016
In 2016 even the internet isn't safe from vengeful spirits wanting to off entitled American teenagers in spectacular fashion. I think the film makers have missed a trick by not broadcasting the cinema release over Skype or Chatroulette here, but credit to them for actually coming up with a fairly unique horror concept in this day and age. The use of real life websites and apps like Facebook and Skype for 99.9% of the film really does aid the atmosphere, even if the cast are your typical unlikeable bunch. Yes they even have an overweight stoner character too.
If anything though I found the gradual unravelling of the supposed circle of friends more fascinating then the usual horror trope of them being killed one by one, seeing how a group as 'close' as this were really a bunch of self centred Arseholes filled me with a sense of glee that no amount of cheap gore can replace.
Oh and the final shot of the film is probably the most predictable bull shit I've seen since...well Sinister 2 actually.
