Review of Unfriended (2014) by Dana S — 12 May 2015
To call it scary would be misleading, and it definitely has a very specific audience (you know pretty quickly if you're not in it). but the film makers know this and know just how much you can keep up with.
With that kept in mind, 'Unfriended' is a welcome subversion of the "found footage" cliche, featuring performances it must not have been easy to give, and an editing job which is second to none! Its premise and logic carry little surprise; I was somewhat shocked by the lack of shocking twist, but recognise there is an examination of cyber-bullying here, which needs to be taken seriously and is possibly seen as more important to the makers than any smart-ass twists and turns.
Credit to the film for providing an ending which, in any other hands would prove typical and tired, but here manages to work, given how involved you have become in the character's online world. This is perhaps a forgettable film for most, but a surprising breath of fresh air for the genre.
