Review of Unforgiven (1992) by Stephen E — 11 Jul 2012
After a slow start, "Unforgiven" becomes the dark, moody fable that so many have dubbed as one of the greatest Westerns of all time, and, thanks to an excellent screenplay from David Peoples, it lives up to expectations.
It's interesting how quickly the script deconstructs a lighthearted yarn and turns it into a dark meditation on violence. Clint Eastwood is his usual, minimalist self and he's supported by an outstanding cast, especially Gene Hackman, who is devilishly sly and patronizing in his role.
There's no doubting that "Unforgiven" has its issues, but most of them occur in the film's opening half; the second half is mesmerizing and sure to leave you stunned.
