Review of Unforgiven (1992) by Timothy S — 21 Feb 2016
An engrossing study of violence and its detrimental effects on the human soul, Unforgiven is my favorite film of all time. Its honest look at the Old West takes out all pretense and shows us what I consider to be the most realistic vision of that time and place that has ever graced the screen.
Gene Hackman's performance is spellbinding, and Eastwood shines as both director and actor. He also wrote the very memorable theme music. Also notable is a strong performance by the always reliable Morgan Freeman, the intense and bloodthirsty performance by Frances Fisher, very impressive turns from Richard Harris and Saul Rubinek as a storybook gunslinger and his sensationalist biographer, and a touching performance by the underrated and still relatively unknown Jaimz Woolvett.
The film has aged beautifully, and will certainly be one for the ages.
