Review of Unfinished Business (2015) by Greg B — 13 Mar 2015
"Unfinished Business" is a black comedy starring Vince Vaughn who plays a disgruntled communications employee who decides to branch off from his current company and form his own sales pitch to the prospective financiers his company wants has investors.
With the help of two misfit employees, Vaughn sets out on a trip to Germany to claim what his is. I can honestly say that the only reason this film doesn't collapse is because of the charm of its leads.
But for the acting, the film would have been a complete disaster. The script is flat and weak, and it is remarkable that the actors are able to improvise with it. There are too many disparate elements in the film, including an underdeveloped relationship between Vaughn and his family that includes such versatile personality types that it should not have just been a backdrop.
The business plot also feels secondary to Vaughn and Tom Wilkinson, who feels out of place in this role, trying to get high at every opportunity possible. I also found the sexual humor over the top, and it felt forced in a film that is supposed to be a comedy about corporate life.
I feel parts of the film worked, and parts didn't. The film is humorous in parts, though never as laughable as it should be. I found this to be an okay film overall, and while not a reinvention of the wheel, it is a watchable, chuckle-inducing comedy ------------------------------------------------------------------ C+.
