Review of Unfaithful (2002) by Daniel K — 03 Feb 2009
I suspect this is the kind of film that is most effective the first time around. One of the main elements that struck me was the films structure. The first part of the film focuses on Lane's characters, then we switch to Gere's character, and we end on both characters being equally involved in the story.
It works quite well. This is the kind of picture that is rarely made. It definitely did remind me of other old French films as I was watching it, even before I knew it was a remake of an old French film.
Lane, Gere, and Martinez all give excellent performances. I'm sure other actors could have played the roles effectively, but this team definitely had what it takes. I imagine that Hitchcock would have enjoyed this picture.
It's deals with events and characters he would be extremely comfortable with, even if it is made in a rather different style. I was deeply involved in the narrative and the characters predicaments, which is precisely as it should be.
Well done.
