Review of Unfaithful (2002) by Laura W — 12 Feb 2008
Although many people will use words like "passionate" and "intense" to describe Unfaithful, the one that sums it up best is "contrived." Almost every set-up in this movie is ridiculously contrived, which could be overlooked if the payoff was worthwhile.
But because the movie doesn't work hard enough to get us to care about its characters before asking us to follow them through one bad choice after another, we don't even care about the payoff when it comes.
Director Adrian Lyne cheaply exploits an excellent performance by Diane Lane for its cliche value rather than using it for the raw emotion that she obviously gave. Ridiculous.
