Review of Undisputed (2002) by Kyle F — 09 Jun 2010
Undisputed is a action thriller drama movie. It starred and was co-produced by Wesley Snipes, co-starring Ving Rhames. In a story reminiscent of the real-life events of Mike Tyson and Desiree Washington, George "Iceman" Chambers, the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion of the world, is convicted of rape and sentenced to prison, which turns his world upside down.
The warden allows a limited amount of boxing to take place at the prison, so an old-time con, Mendy Ripstein, arranges a fight between Chambers and the prison boxing champion, Monroe Hutchen, who has been incarcerated and undefeated for 10 years. Immediately there is bad blood, Chambers not wanting to be second to anyone. It leads to a lunch-room confrontation between the men. Ripstein, who is a true historian and lover of boxing, arranges worldwide betting on the big fight to see which one is the real undisputed champ.
Not a great movie, but a VERY GOOD movie that is part prison drama, part boxing flick. Snipes and Rhames do outstanding jobs as the boxers, as does Falk as a aging mobster. Although a little boring at times, I found this quite entertaining. Not your typical prison OR boxing flick. It ain't no Rocky Balboa film, but better than Rocky 5 lol.
If you're a fan of either genre, or either Snipes or Rhames for that matter, this is worth to watch. Snipes and Rhames were great.
