Review of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009) by Malcolm D — 22 May 2010
The first underworld was not a very good movie, the back story to it didn?t seem interesting the first time I watched it, however this prequel explores more into the back-story and it does it with style.
This really surprised me, the acting was great especially by Bill Nighy who in contrast to his comedic roles in love actually and hot fuzz plays the homicidal leader of the vampires. The action was crazy; you really get the feeling of speed and accuracy at which these vampires and werewolves move and fight.
There are many memorable scenes and it is smart how in the first 2 underworld movies the Lykens are the main antagonists but in this the protagonist is Lucian and the vampires are seen to be evil, this change in perspective give a fresh new look on the whole dilemma.
This prequel is really what the first movie should have been however despite that I love how the ending ties into the first movie.
