Review of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009) by Corey E — 10 Sep 2010
As a personal bias I?m drawn to vampire movies and books by some preternatural force. The movie is rehash of information garnered in the second movie. Excluding the as usual great acting of Nighy and the beauty of Rhona Mitra the movie is lackluster.
Even though Nighy tops my pluses in the movie, you can sense even he has a hard time committing to the arc of the story. The werewolves are the central focus of the story. The Vampires seem to have lost all there powers except for there changing eye color (or was that just lack of continuity).
The vampires are just medieval characters with pale skin. This is the antithesis of what I enjoy in Anne Rice books. We know the arc of the story going in and you?d think they could enhance embellish or develop the story to where it stand on its own.
I just doesn?t happen. They spend no time developing the characters and expect the movie to stand on poorly lit the fight scenes dusted off rubber masks and rehashed CGI. I DVR-ed both 1 and 2 prior to watching this to in the genre and make sure I did not miss any of the thinly veiled plot.
Watching 2 prior to this movie is pointless unless you need a Beckensdale latex fix.
