Review of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009) by Sandra V — 14 Feb 2014
Grade A cheese-tastic melodrama that takes its over-the-top setting far too seriously. And fans will probably howl at me in derision, and I didn't see the first two so maybe I'm missing something, but how do vampires have children? And if she was born a vampire, how could she get older and turn into Rhona Mitra? But kudos to Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy for relishing their dire-logue and going at it with such conviction, even though you would think that they were now above this sort of B-movie nonsense.
It's also perpetually dark, so it feels like everything happens on some sort of twilit vampire planet instead of the middle ages. But the romance between Mitra and Sheen is quite sexy and the armour looks cool.
And the mythology around the vampires and werewolves is original and interesting. Also didn't know Tony Blair could be such a hairy chested hottie!
