Review of Underworld: Blood Wars (2016) by Samuel C — 05 Jun 2017
I can't believe this film was rated so low. I simply love the Underworld franchise, it redeems vampires and lycans alike after the world was beset with the ungodly teenage romance that is Twilight.
Awakening was poor. It was just messy and incoherent and I didn't care for it at all, especially after the previous films which were so gritty and exciting. Blood Wars brought it back. The casting has always been brilliant and the addition of Tobias Menzies was a sound choice. You might remember him from Game of Thrones as the perfectly awe inspiring Edmune Tully... A new light was shed on him for a certainty, he was mean, fierce and unrelenting and fit the role so brilliantly.
The loss of Victor, God rest his tortured soul, was a blow. Bill Nighy portayed possibly the coolest vampire I've ever seen on the screen, but Charles Dance surely makes up for that. And not to mention the main lady in shining leather. Nothing needs to be said about her acting skills and portrayal of the unstoppable killing machine, Selene.
So, perfect casting, great acting, gore and violence, grit and betrayal, what's not to love? I loved the storyline. I almost forgot it's set in the 21st century until Selene and David jumped in a car after the tearful death of (no spoiler). All in all, a fantastic storyline with a few unexpected twists, the predictable comes less predictable and the creators brought the franchise back to its former glory. I cannot wait for the next movie, it's going to be terrific!
I've read a review which said the movie lacks perspective for uninitiated viewers. That's like watching Return of The King before The Fellowship.
Give the series a chance, it's up the with the best for me.
