Review of Underworld: Awakening (2012) by Sindronian — 07 Dec 2015
Personally, this film is worse than average.
Objectively, this film screams average in terms of Hollywood action movies, so a 5 seems fair.
Even though the first 3 weren't critically acclaimed, I'm a huge fan of the trilogy. At least in terms of plot/script, the first 3 were well beyond most action movies (funny, considering most critics thought of the plot as convoluted and hard to follow).
This is the first underworld film where I actually took no interest in the story. I barely finished it but stayed with it because I'm an underworld fan.
Negative points:
- All the interesting characters died in the first 3 movies. In awakening, Selene's character turns from a bad-ass into an emotional concerned mother. Some people may argue Selene's transformation is character development, but I call it cliche. You could tell they had no new interesting characters, because they tried to replace Bill Nighy's character (Victor) with Charles Dance's version. It isn't that Charles Dance's version of Victor is a bad one, he's a decent replacement. However, the issue is that Victor is dead, so why the **** would we want to see some lesser version of him? Failed to take an opportunity to create a new interesting leader by trying to replace an old one.
