Review of Underworld: Awakening (2012) by Jewel H — 14 Jul 2012
I love the Underworld series. I find it overall to be a very creative story yet this time...eh. It fell short. All shooting and special effects. The story was lacking. Spoiler alert if you plan to watch it : It begins with a brief explanation of humans discovering Lycans/Vampires.
They attempt to cleanse the world of them and there is a war. Selene planned to run off with her beloved hybrid Michael but he was targeted at the last moment and both were captured. She remained frozen for 12 years as subject 2 until someone freed her.
To her surprise she has a daughter. (that looks older than 12 years and either I missed the explanation of how she came to be or something because I can't remember the scene where that was discussed) - It was her daughter (hybrid as well) that freed her.
.she was subject 1. I love Selene and I love her action packed character/scenes but it was all action, not much of a plot - the minimal plot it did contain had holes all over. Getting off track here but does her gun ever run out of bullets? Except for one scene where it seemed to but I missed her reloading b/c after it finally ran out, she was back in action in no time and didn't seem to run out ever again.
hmmm. But I digress. I love the idea of the hybrids however so much was left out when it came to the story. It just seems as if she wakes up, escapes looking for Michael with whom she shares visions (I missed that ability in the last one too) .
..realizes the visions she is following are of the hybrid daughter who the lycans are desperate to get a hold of. She realizes the lab is basically lycans in hiding working to utilize her daughter (hybrids) to strengthen their own kind from being killed from silver bullets as silver bullets do not kill hybrids and they are so far the strongest of both species.
How the lycans managed to pull that off under everyone's nose, I'll never know. There is another male vampire in the midst of it all who has heard of Selene the death dealer and wants to go back into battling for the species of what is left of vampires.
He could have been utilized better or 'more'....And in one part he dies and she literally massages his heart back into beating..I didn't know she could do that either (lots of tricks Selene has up her sleeve) and excuse me for also questioning a beating heart with vampires.
I realize you can't criticize mythical beings as they are not real but I still look for a common thread at times and consistency. So I felt the story was lacking, not much was explained (very gleaned over) as I felt it should have been and it was mostly all fighting.
The end is left open for a sequel. I hope they do it and it contains a story as the 1st Underworld did.
