Review of Undertow (2009) by Dave J — 03 Sep 2010
It isn't every day that you see a film about a love triangle between a man and wife and the ghost of the husband's secret male lover, and there's therefore a danger of seeing 'Undertow' as something of a novelty item. It deserves better, because it uses magic realism cleverly to tell a thoughtful and very well acted tale. Set in a staunchly Catholic Peruvian fishing village, the film clearly reveals the hurt caused by the deep homophobia and entrenched gender roles in the village, while at the same time showing the rare degree of neighbourly mutual support to be found in this.
Old-fashioned faith-based community. The ending felt a little contrived and soap-operatic, but this is an intelligent examination of some of the pros and cons of tradition.
