Review of Undertow (2009) by Roberto P — 09 Dec 2010
Very often gay-theme movies are about sex and more sex without any intention of making a lovely -or at least- interesting movie. It's all about success. Fortunately there are some people (a few ones) who are interested in show love beyond the gender, to show problematic of the life as such beyond just the hurry of being commercially successful. With "Brokeback Mountain" Ang Lee broke that line and since then we haven't seen any other story that worth to watch until "Undertow" appeared.
The movie is quite nice despite the fact of how slowly it turns out by moments. The narrative is not perfect but at least makes you to want keep watching. The final is already told since yet the beginning but the magical realism penetrates in the heart making you believe that love is possible no matter the circunstances. After that it's not possible to continue without saying that Tatiana Astengo's performance is admirable. Finally "Undertow" -I think- will represent Peru in the road to an Oscar nomination as well as "The Milk of Sorrow" did before.
