Review of Undertow (2004) by Scott C — 19 Jul 2008
A Good Early Directorial Effort. This is a decent film. Not a great film, but a very worthwhile one and definitely not, as one reviewer here said, "one of the worst movies ever made"! My how some people exaggerate! The picture seems very inspired by director Terrence Mallick's films 'Days of Heaven' and 'Badlands' in its exploration of the quieter human moments amidst very tense outer circumstances.
In this case two young boys run for their lives from their murderous uncle, but spend much of their time on the road just hanging out and enjoying each other's company. While it's an interesting approach, this is where the film sorta falls flat, because we forget about the danger and the larger conflict at hand.
Therefore the story loses its dramatic steam. On the plus side, the visuals and performances are out of this world. Young director David Gordon Green is definitely a hot new talent.
