Review of Undertow (1996) by S. G — 04 Feb 2007

This is the first movie I've seen done by David Gordon Green, and it certainly will not be the last. There's lots of praise going about David and this film, for me, proves it. He has quickly became a favourite director of mine.

But sometimes he strays away from the story for further character development, which works for him at times. But can take away from the viewing experience and makes the viewer want the story to get back on track.

But the performances are just beautifully acted. This movie just makes me like Bell even more. Jamie Bell, as the rebellious teen with a southern accent, it's just perfect. Anyone else who would have played Chris, the film would have not worked out. Bell is as perfect in his role as Chris. Hopefully, this film will take him out of the shadow of Billy Elliot, to show what he is capable of. And Josh Lucas plays a great villain. Throughout his viewing on the screen, he is always intense, having that feel of danger or something bad is going to happen. He is just as well perfect as Bell is.

But there is one slight problem with the film that indeed stands out: a thriller without many thrills. The film is pretty much one without a lot of successful suspense. There are few times when the film tries suspense on, sorry to say, but it fails. And the ending... maybe if it had a better end this would definitely receive the praise that it truly deserves.

The shots of the scenery are amazing and the open chase scene accompanied by Glass' score, is quite chilling and entertaining.

I'm seriously in love with this movie, and if it had a greater ending, it would have been one of the best movies I've seen.

I would suggest that you see this movie if you get the chance, it's unquestionably a good movie, and if not for the superb performances this film would not be what it is, however, it is a very good film.
