Review of Underdog (2007) by Brandon L — 18 Feb 2010
This was a fun movie for all ages. Its good for the little kids because who doesn't love a talking dog with superpowers who can fly and is actually pretty funny. As for the adults, anyone who use to watch the old Underdog cartoon, will enjoy the little hints they use in the film from the tv show, plus it brings back alot of good memories of good cartoons on tv...not like what today's youth watch!
I thought Jason Lee did a good job voice Underdog and even though he had some corny lines, alot of the lines made me laugh out loud and got my attention. He brought the character to life and he made the movie.
Peter Dinklage was amazing as Dr. Simon Barsinister. I'm glad they got someone who was actually that height and not some actor who they put their face on a generated body. My only concern was he really wasn't that evil and his plan wasn't that well thought out or really suspenseful when put into effect.
Jim Belushi should just retire from everything in the media. He was useless as the dad who wants to be there for his son but chooses a night job over being a cop. In an natural sense, if he died on the job, his kid would be taken care of, yet with his security job... I don't think his pension is going to help anyone. Alex Neuberger was unnoticeable as Jack, Underdogs owner. They could have gotten any kid off the street who could have done a better than this kid.
As for the last 3 co-stars, Patrick Warburton was great as the dumb henchmen( a part he normally plays), Amy Adams as the voice of Polly was fair, at times she got annoying and seemed a little too full of herself. And Taylor Momsen as Molly, Polly's owner was just horrible. For a reporter in training she has to be the dumbest character in the whole film. Thankfully she got a better part as playing "lil J" in Gossip Girl.
The plot is very simple, a bumbling dog gets into an accident and gains superpowers, helps a family get back together and stops the villain. My only problem with the film is that Underdog didn't really have any enemies that could stop him so he didn't really overcome any opposition. But I loved the fact that they turned his powers into a pill in homage to the cartoon series. As a good family film its a good reccomendation, but by youself, you can easily skip it and watch the old cartoons.
