Review of Underdog (2007) by Jesse H — 26 Jun 2012
I am a fan of the Underdog TV series. That said, I have absolutely no idea why this movie was made. Nothing about the original TV series screams cinema. That said, the director and the screenwriters were largely at fault for this movie sucking.
First, I'd like to say that the transitions are awful in this movie. I usually avoid criticizing editing, but it is so noticeable that it becomes a key distraction from the plot of this movie. However, maybe some distraction from the plot is needed in this case.
The script is incredibly lazy, and inclines to narrate what is occurring rather then actually show it, probably because it takes less work. Above that, there are so many noticeable plot holes that the plot loses all credibility it hadn't lost previously.
But above all, this film has no faith in its' target audience. The screenwriters obviously believed that kids cannot handle anything more then a basic story without constant explanation from a narrator.
Overall, Underdog certainly is a underachiever. Even if it shouldn't had been made into a movie, at the very least an attempt could have been made to make this movie good. Underdog isn't unforgivably bad, but it is bad.
I will admit that Underdog is a harmless film that does do some stuff right (Patrick Warburton), but it doesn't do enough right to truly justify a watch. My recommendation, don't waste your time on this movie.
It won't make you angry, but you'll just be board for an hour and 20 minutes. 1/5 stars.
