Review of Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) by Margaret K — 25 Mar 2011
I think after every viewing of this movie, I like it less and less. I just find that it lacks the punch it should have; it holds more than "Eat Pray Love", but regardless, the hit is weak. And I can't quite place why - it may be that Diane Lane's character is a weak woman, or simply that her acting is weak but on the other hand, she's totally the every woman who is relatable so it does work. The story is a little stuffy, or clunky at least but still, I can't put my finger on it.
It looks great, sounds great, even potentially smells great as it works as the ideal postcard for Tuscany. The supporting players are prefect (in particular Oh, Duncan, Riotta and Szajda (who in particular leads a tragic troupe of characters)) but the supporting players can't hold the weight all on their own. I do feel that it is sadly Lane who weakens the film simply in her acting style.
On a side note, Rory's Dad is the bf at the end, I like seeing and think it's funny that Oh and Walsh play a couple and I can't believe I haven't reviewed this yet! I think this is the third time I've seen it!
