Review of Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) by Amanda H — 08 Aug 2012
All the positive reviews I read about this film go on about how "empowering" it is. I don't really see how. The main character gets divorced and mopes about a bit until she runs off to Tuscany where, lo and behold, she has a fling with another man which bucks her up for a bit.
Then that doesn't work out, so she's depressed and lonely, then she meets another man and is happy again! The message I'm receiving isn't one of female strength and independence, it's one of only being complete with a man or a baby in tow.
Seems like standard chick flick stuff really. It's an unremarkable and fairly dull film, but it did really make me want to visit Italy just for the scenery!
