Review of Under the Shadow (2016) by Daniel P — 23 Jul 2016
Last weekend I got to see the "Under the Shadow" at the BiFAN in Korea.
I went into the movie without any knowledge of the movie and the timeline it was set.
I don't know too much about Iranian culture or the timeline this movie is based however, I understood quite easily what the movie was trying to say and was surprised quite a bit with the depth.
In general, the relationship between the mother and daughter felt similar in a way to the relationship you can see in Aliens with Ripley and Newt.
There is a feeling of trying to protect the daughter despite lack of strength and knowing that it is almost impossible to win the battle.
There is a mix of trying to protect the daughter as a single mum in a difficult era of being a women in that country and time.
On top of that there is a war going on as well which is the fundamental "Scare" of the movie in my opinion and how much people suffered through the time.
It really felt like a independent Iranian version of Aliens in terms of casting with the horror feeling of the first Alien in a way.
