Review of Under the Same Moon (2007) by R M — 04 May 2008
+ Kate Del Castillo. She had me trying to gulp down the knot within the first five minutes of the movie. What a brilliant actress; I sincerely hope she achieves her goals in Hollywood.
+ I can't believe 'Carlitos' is giving performances like this and he doesn't even have his little peach fuzz yet.
+ They handled the cinematography and direction quite nicely. (I really enjoyed how the director chose to handle the final scene).
+ Minimal amount of exaggeration and exploitation in a film begging to be made into a overwrought sentimentalist two-hour hyperbole. They actually sweetened this way down from the real version of immigration that I have firsthandedly seen.
- PLOT HOLES.
- SERENDIPITY: USE IN MODERATION.
- The script had Televisa unattractively scribbled all over it.
- Mexican directors should learn how to tell soap operas and movies apart. Was it really necessary to add that little tidbit about the long-lost father?
- A lot of untied strings. So Kate's friend is dating a menacing cholo with tattoos. The point being?
- The director was shoving the issue right up our asses. Subtle. Ha.
