Review of Under the Same Moon (2007) by Kathy T — 22 Jun 2008
What a wonderful film. Exploring the difficulties illegal immigrants face, the film finds its heart in the son's journey to find his mother, the hardships he faces, the people he meets, and the emotional and economic hardship his mother struggles beneath in the meantime.
The immigration bit seems a bit biased, casting illegal immigrants as nothing but honest and hardworking people, and Americans as selfish, ignorant, and obsessed with nothing but money. There was, in the entire film, ONE anglo saxon character that was decent to anyone.
Still, those elements don't distract from the focus of the film, that of the bond between mother and child. This is a powerful film, and I teared up several times throughout the film. As a testament to the film's strength, one of those moments was in the first fifteen minutes as the son is forced to start out onto his journey.
See it as soon as you can.
