Review of Under the Same Moon (2007) by Josh R — 20 Jun 2009
Touching tale about a young Mexican boy who backpacks solo towards Los Angeles to be with his mother, and the challenges he faces paralleled with her hardship as an illegal immigrant. While a little overly sentimental, all the elements of the "search-for-family" fable hit the right notes.
Ultimately however, the film's most compelling message is perfectly emphasized by one of the characters: No one chooses the life we have, we just have to make the best of it. "Under the Same Moon," although slightly sugar-coated, puts into perspective the lengths some Mexican-immigrants have gone through just in order to make an honest, better life for their families.
Some fine acting from the charismatic cast, too.
