Review of Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (1995) by Jason D — 14 May 2009
The world needed another Under Siege about as bad as it needed another Donnie Darko film, but hey, money is the root of all evil, and when it sings, people come dancing. Naturally, with the great success of the first Under Siege, the greedy Hollywood executives beckoned for another one for masses to consume and thus gave us Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, and why not? This concept has worked so well with the Die Hard films.
This time, Seagal's character is on a train, trying to connect with his niece (a young Katherine Heigl, before she shot to fame and became a bitch), until the train gets taken over by yet another terrorist group bent on screwing with the U.
S. satellites and causing death and destruction. The group is led by Eric Bogosian, who is an effective villain (not to mention fairly entertaining), but is a far cry from the genius pairing of Tommy Lee Jones and Gary Busey from the first film.
Seagal continues to karate kick a bunch of people and save the day. You can pretty much guess the formula of this film. That's not to say it wasn't an enjoyable movie. In fact, I did like Under Siege 2, but it is inferior to the original (much like most sequels).
Still, a fun, dumb ride, especially with Seagal, who only had a few more good movies after this before fading into direct to DVD obscurity.
