Review of Uncle Buck (1989) by Matt S — 14 Feb 2011
"Uncle Buck" doesn't start out like your typical comedy. The characters in the movie don't pretend to be perfect or likable, and that's something that I think is out of the ordinary in movies today.
This is John Candy's movie, first of all, and he really shines in this role as Uncle Buck. He's not as gross or sleazy as the cover wants you to think, and his character really grows on you. The role of the teenage girl, definitely has an arc to it, and it takes time to really understand why she's in the film. Like I said, not everything is squeaky-clean here, but that's what makes Candy's comedic brilliance work here. He thrives in those awkward moments and applies his own deliberately invasive humor to every situation until it warrants a response from another character, it's very much trademark John Candy.
If you're a Candy fan and you want a watch a movie that will surprise you as much as make you laugh. Check it out. Recommended.
