Review of Uncle Buck (1989) by Alex M — 08 Apr 2013
The undisputed gem that perfectly balances comedy and drama. It's a highly funny and likeable film, but with plenty of sad and heartfelt moments between several strong well written characters. Of course I've always been a big fan of John Candy, and he was just a marvel to watch.
It's a great premise and John Hughes did such a wonderful job getting us to both dislike and sympathize with John Candy's crass lifestyle. In the end, he ends up affecting the lives of these kids and even his family, in ways you didn't expect.
I seem to remeber this being actually quite dark and sexualized for a children's movie, but in the end- it's perfectly appropriate for the character of Uncle Buck. This may very well be my favorite comedy, and never old.
Who can forget that iconic movie moment when he's wielding that chainsaw at the daughter's party to scare off her creepy loser boyfriend? GREAT!
