Review of Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010) by Ben K — 17 Feb 2011
This tribute to cinema and death is and original and strangely sublime take on a Thai ghost story. It tells the tale of a dying man who is visited by his late wife and long-lost monkey-spirit son as he recollects his past reincarnations.
It's a hypnotic, dream-like experience that will baffle and bore many, and enthrall and fascinate a few. It's full of cinematic devices, mourns the death of old ways in cinema and life, while celebrating the visual beauty of film.
It's meditative, whimsical, poetic, and wholly bizarre, but unceasingly wonderful. I can't give enough praise or find enough adjectives to give this rare art house experience the recognition it deserves.
