Review of Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives (2010) by J.b. R — 14 Aug 2012
Uncle Boonmee is an intelligent and innovative work from Thai director Weerasethakul. Due to it's interwoven fantasy and docu-drama structure, the film can be hard to follow and feel overly slow in the way in which it was edited.
However, if you give yourself over to the film as a dream (and one that will not make "sense") it washes over you and contains some of the most interesting visual images I have ever seen. It is rare for a film that feels so avant garde to also be so fluid and entertaining but this film achieves that for the most part.
The underlying ties to the evolution of cinema itself strengthen the seemingly abstract narrative structure. A very unique film that all lovers of foreign cinema should see.
