Review of Unbroken: Path to Redemption (2018) by Elijah B — 13 Oct 2018
The first film was great, but after reading the book I felt that it only met Louis Zamperini half-way. The first installment told the story of the indefatigable spirit of a man in the face of incredible hardship and suffering. But the war left the real Louis Zamperini broken in a lot of the same ways many veterans suffer.
It is the second half of the story that I found even more intriguing. The first part of the story almost seems inhuman, the second part tells the other side of the story. It's an extremely human story of a man who is outwardly a hero but who is struggling with intense inter spiritual conflict and PTSD. It's this part of the story which makes the Zamperini story relevant, consumable , and even applicable for viewers.
It's the part of the story that earns the title of "Unbroken".
The first film is incomplete without the second. Well done.
