Like most films adapted from books if you read the book your reaction to the movie will be much different than had you not read it. I myself hadn't read the book and felt mixed about the film. At times it comes off way too cliche and comes off a bit forced, especially towards the beginning.
The writing is definitely lacking which is incredibly surprising considering the scribes. As the movie progresses and less dialogue is spoken the film improves immensely and becomes quite enjoyable. It's definitely not one of the best films of 2014 but will leave you feeling encouraged and motivated which seemed to be lacking this year.
