Review of Unbroken (2014) by Clem A — 26 Jan 2015
In life there are events that test us; physical, mental & emotional challenges that shape us & our ultimate achievements in life. If we are fortunate, the challenges make us strong enough to achieve our goals.
A few of us may become heroes. In " Unbroken ," the inspirational adaptation of the best-selling book of the same name, director Angelina Jolie & screenwriters Joel & Ethan Coen tell the story of the remarkable endurance of Louis "Louie" Zamperini.
The movies spans his troubled youth, his growing interest in the sport of track, encouraged by his older brother who advised, "if you can take it, you can make it," leading to Zamberini winning an Olympic Medal & continues to his service as a bombardier in the military, where while still training for the next Olympics, his plane goes down & he survives seven weeks adrift in the Pacific.
Eventually recovered by the Japanese & imprisoned in a POW camp Zamperini continues to survive, enduring brutal torture & near starvation. In a heartfelt performance as Louie, Jack O'Connell shows the inner strength of this Olympic Medal winner & war hero, especially during his time in the Japanese POW camp where his spirit was repeatedly & cruelly tested by the Warden Watanabe.
The movie achieves its greatest intensity in the scenes between Louis & Watanabe, having tended to run a bit slow & long in the beginning, particularly the opening scenes of the air battle. Despite these small complaints, I still recommend SEEING THIS FILM.
" Unbroken " is up for three Academy Award nominations: Best Cinematography (Roger Deakins), Best Sound Mixing, & Best Sound Editing.
