Review of Unbroken (2014) by Wendy D — 23 Oct 2016
This is another story about World War II and the cruelty of the prison camps. What makes it different and special is that its protagonist really existed and this film shows us how he managed to keep his spirit intact (unbroken) despite all the abuse and privations he suffered as a prisoner.
He could endure all the pain and did not give up because of his faith, the teachings of his brother and what he learned as an athlete. Angelina Jolie does a great job providing all evidence of authenticity by passing the protagonist getting us to empathize with him from the first moment and we continue to do so throughout the film.
Whether in the plane crash, the time he spent drifting at the sea or the entire period in the prison camp and the relentlessness with him the Japanese sergeant. The trouble is that the story develops in a very conventional way; there is nothing we have not seen before in other films of similar theme.
The Coen brother's script and direction of Jolie leave us the typical biography instead of an incredible and inspiring history about the strength of the human spirit.
