Review of Unbreakable (2000) by Brendan V — 30 May 2011
Each time I see this movie, I like it better than I did before. It's a low key superhero film - which in today's film industry seems like an oxymoron. The film takes it's time to unspool but it is completely enrapturing. Samuel L. Jackson delivers a surprisingly emotional performance, Bruce Willis & Robin Wright Penn are both excellent as a married couple whose relationship is on the rocks, and even Spencer Clark does good work (despite his character being quite frustrating sometimes). The script, the cinematography (LOVE the use of color to identify characters), and the score all play outside the norm but work together surprisingly well. The movie is unsettling, tense, surprising, and incredibly moving. It is a breath of fresh air.
M. Night haters can eat it. This movie is awesome.
