Review of Unbreakable (2000) by Yash S — 06 Mar 2012
There is little doubt that Shyamalan at the top of his game knew how to use the film medium. But to what end was he putting his skills ? Oh, right. Justifying the possibility of superheroes. I personally dont believe that a comic book will ever get more dignity than how much Chris Nolan gave it. It doesnt take a deconstructionist to decode the fact that comics are junk, a means of escape. But in the meanwhile, people refuse to learn that superheros are a business, not an art.
Jackson has an organic presence that lends credibility and power to just about any role he plays. Here he has a mythic gravitas as the tortured anti-hero. The film is empty of any ideas that might engage you. That is, unless you are a passive recipient of vapid pop-culture, as comic lovers are.
