Review of Unbreakable (2000) by Jeff S — 09 Mar 2012
This is one on my favorite of M. Night Shyamalan's films. After Signs. I have watched it a number of times, and I see new things each time. Bruce Willis is perfectly sad/subdued/humbled, as is Wright-Penn.
Samuel l Jackson is creepy/sad. Spencer Clark is worshipful, like any hero worshipper should be. I think it's a shame Shyamlan started to believe his own press, and the magic spell he was under when he made this, Signs, and The Sixth Sense was ruined as a result.
But this movie really is very special. Maybe the reception he got for Last Avatar will have sufficiently flogged him back to a place where he can find this kind of magic again. Because I think Shyamalan may be a genious.
Just don't tell him. Please.
