Review of Unbreakable (2000) by Lewis E — 23 Feb 2015
It took me too long to finally see 'The Sixth Sense', having the main twist spoiled in the process, but no one would begrudge you if you've never seen M.Night Shyamalan's less commercially successful production, 'Unbreakable'.
Sort of serving like a younger brother to 'Sixth Sense', the movie shows glimmers of the same unique talent through its surreal tone and narrative twists and turns. What is most amazing is realising this is actually a superhero movie, albeit one which trades glamorous action for down to earth drama.
It provides a very human and realistic interpretation of a man forced to confront his special attributes and the psychological drama over whether or not to accept superhero responsibility. It is an unconventional take on the genre and, although very unlikely, it would have been interesting to see how they could develop this origin story further onto a larger scale.
Despite sharing qualities with 'The Sixth Sense' in regards to its originality and blend of authentic characters with sci-fi elements, 'Unbreakable' is ultimately affected by a significantly weaker ending which poses extra questions instead of answering the ones audiences had.
As a consequence, it fails to reach the intelligent heights of its elder sibling and is inevitably tarnished in comparison.
